My name is David Knight and I am researching my family members' life stories.
William George Knight, my great grandfather, was a prominent businessman around the turn of the last century, owning the 'Shoulder of Mutton' public house and hotel on Bridge Street and a poultry, game and fish mart at 47 Fisherton Street.
Of course, the shop still remains, in a different guise, because it had Grade II listed status. It has a unique façade in Poole Pottery.
The reason why I am writing is that a cousin (who I had not seen in 40 years) has given me a photograph of a cricket team in Salisbury.
I would suggest this was taken c.1920 but I am not sure. I would like to please ask, through the columns of your newspaper, whether any of your readers would know of the location and team.
Local historians may have some idea.
I would imagine that William George, who is positioned sitting in the centre of the front row with the dog to his left (he never seemed to have a photograph taken without his beloved dogs) was a non playing member of the club. At this time, he might have been club chairman, being so centrally positioned.
William George Knight was an accomplished field sportsman, regularly winning trophies for fishing, shooting and hare coursing - an activity now banned. He died in 1932 at the age of 84 years.
