TWO teenage athletes from the City of Salisbury club were the day’s outstanding winners at the 5k parkrun in Churchill Gardens.

In his first run on the course, the steadily improving Jay Domoney, in the 15-17 age group, clocked a speedy 17min 01sec to take first place overall.

Second spot went to his clubmate Steve Auton, from among the 30-34 year-olds, who crossed the line in 18.37.

Salisbury’s other top performer was 14 year-old Abi Burn whose fine 19.38, despite the cold conditions, was good enough for sixth place overall and gave her first female placing. She still holds the women’s course record of 18.45 set in more favourable conditions last August.

Josephine Whyte, from the 70-74 age group, clocked a personal best 52.06 and Rod Smith in the same group recorded 28.01.

The quick times came on a day where another attendance record was broken again as some 331 walkers and runners took part in Saturday's event.

Event director, Elizabeth Roberts, said: “Our events were averaging around 190 participants last summer and 170 before Christmas, so we are delighted to have broken the attendance record three times in January. The core volunteer team is very excited to have recorded our highest ever turnout on 30th January with 331 people crossing the finish line. I would like to thank all our volunteers for making Salisbury parkrun such a huge success every week."

The Walk2Run Initiative has been very popular, with the first-timers at the beginning of the month returning on subsequent Saturdays and bringing along their friends. We've built a great community at Salisbury parkrun since we started last June and I believe this is why we see so many people attending every week.

"We aim to make Salisbury the fittest city in the south!”

This weekend sees the Salisbury club in action on the Isle Wight at the hilly Ryde 10mile race, the next fixture in the Hampshire road race league.
