Downton Link held a social evening for volunteers and their partners in the Sherwood Suite at Downton Sports Complex in Wick Lane on April 12.

Excellent entertainment was provided by local musicians 'Suite Jazz' who performed a selection of jazz numbers, old and new, and also some songs from musical theatre.

The evening afforded an opportunity to make presentations to two volunteers who have recently retired after 25 years of service to The Link, as it is popularly known in the area.

During her time as a volunteer, Janet Shores was the sole transport coordinator for many years until the role was shared with others.

Janet also served on the management committee until her retirement at this year’s AGM. Asked for her reflections on those 25 years, Janet commented: “It was a hugely rewarding experience helping people with their transport needs.

"The Link provides a vital service, and I built up a good rapport with both clients and drivers over the years and made many friends.”

Jim Pearce joined Downton Link as a volunteer driver in 1999, a few years after it began, and has driven countless miles for the Link in that time.

He said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Link - you meet so many interesting people as a Link driver and I would recommend anyone to give it a try.

"You can do as much or as little as fits with your circumstances – it’s really flexible and there is a social side when you can meet other drivers.”

Downton Link is a registered charity, formed in 1996, and is part of a network of over forty Link schemes throughout Wiltshire supporting people with transport who would otherwise be unable to get to hospitals, doctors and dental surgeries, hairdressers or just shopping.

They serve clients living in Downton, Woodfalls and Redlynch and adjacent villages stretching as far as Breamore and Woodgreen to the south and Charlton All Saints to the north.

Past chairman Peter Bishop said: "We are always looking to recruit new drivers, transport coordinators and people to serve on the management committee so why not contact us

"Even if it is for just a few hours a week it provides an opportunity to meet local people and is a worthwhile way of volunteering which is hugely appreciated by the clients who rely on us”.
