Firefighters urged residents to close their doors and windows to keep smoke out of their homes as a fire raged across a field in Downton.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were called just after 2pm on Thursday, June 15, following reports of a fire on a field near Breamore Road, Downton. 

When firefighters arrived, they found 5,000 square metres of grassland alight.

The blaze was extinguished after 35 minutes using beaters and hose reel jets.

The fire service said: "We were called just before 2pm today with reports of a field fire near Braemore Road, Downton. 

"Fire appliances from Redhill Park and Verwood are in attendance along with a crew from Fordingbridge. 

"On arrival, firefighters found an area of grass field alight measuring 50m x 100m which has been extinguished using beaters and two hose reel jets. 

"The stop message came through at 2:35pm and crews are still on scene inspecting neighbouring properties to check for fire spread."

This comes after a number of incidents in the last week. 

On June 9, a block of flats went up in flames in Amesbury, leaving a number of families homeless. 

And on Wednesday, June 14, a commercial building was partially destroyed near the railway tracks in Tisbury.

Firefighters remained at the scene in Downton to ensure no fire has spread to neighbouring properties.
