August 26 is International Dog Day and dog owners have been celebrating the occasion with appreciation posts.

The annual event sees people all over the world take to social media to share stories, photos and videos of their canine companions.

One Twitter user said: “Duke helps @docgovtnz with their work protecting kākāpō, the world’s only flightless parrot. Duke is specially trained to find kākāpō with his strong sense of smell.”

A dog owner took to Twitter to show his dog having fun on a sandy beach. He said: Happy #InternationalDogDay to the boy, Ronnie.”

Milo and Ollie’s dog owner shared pictures of their adventures including a party thrown for them, saying: “happy international dog day milo and ollie”

Another Twitter user took to the platform to show appreciation for her dog. She said: Happy #InternationalDogDay J, you truly are an absolute (star emoji)”

You can post your own appreciation posts to the social media platform and use the hashtag #InternationalDogDay if you wish.
