A NOISY 21st birthday party for a peer's daughter kept nearby residents awake all night.

Protest calls were made to Wiltshire Council about the volume of music during the celebrations for Baron Margadale's daughter Nancy at the family's Fonthill Estate near Tisbury.

One man accused the peer of showing "contempt for people of lower social class living in the surrounding area" as the music continued until 8.30am.

Now Lord Margadale himself has issued an apology via the Journal, saying the sound carried far further than anyone had expected.

Nancy had informed residents living near Hindon Lane of the celebration which took place on Sunday, September 11.

Unfortunately those living in nearby villages were not notified.

One Tisbury resident who asked not to be named said he was kept awake all night.

He said: "A life peer of the realm ignored existing noise pollution laws.

"Although he is privileged being entitled to sit in the House of Lords, his irresponsible behaviour in allowing such an event to take place, demonstrates his contempt for people of lower or equal social class living in the surrounding area.

"It should be pointed out him that although he is a Baron, he does not have feudal rights over his serfs anymore."

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: "We have spoken to the Fonthill Estate about the need to keep noise levels down between these hours.

"We would always ask people holding an event at their home to consider their neighbours, particularly turning noise down after 11pm."

Lord Margadale said: "The music was loud and it went on until 8.30am on the Sunday morning.

"I appreciate this caused a number of people distress.

"My daughter did tell a number of nearby residents in advance by letter and the ones she met thanked her.

"I appreciate though that the sound carried far further than we could ever have expected and I'm very sorry to all of those who were affected."
