SALFORD in the 1970s was the setting for Salisbury Cathedral School’s recent play, ‘East is East’ by Ayub Khan-Din.

Pupils from Years 7 and 8 performed the story of an inter-cultural clash within a mixed race family.

"This was a complex and sometimes difficult play for the children to perform," said Paul Rutherford, the school’s Head of English and Drama and director of the play. "It is not easy to imagine yourself in a totally different context, not only physically but culturally too.

"During rehearsals, there were struggles with accents and dialogue, but then everything came together into two outstanding performances. The play was fantastic – really energetic, compelling and, at times, very poignant."
