A TEAM from Tisbury are preparing to take on the gruelling Coniston Challenge in aid of Guide Dogs.

The event, on September 19, involves a 10k trek, 17km cycle and 3km kayak in the scenic Lake District.

Jeani and Matt Grant are part of the Coniston Stars, who are taking on the challenge of both completing the course and raising more than £2,000.

The minimum sponsor limit of £2,000 will be donated to Guide Dogs and anything over the amount will go towards Salisbury & District Guide Dogs’ Name a Puppy appeal to fund their fifth guide dog puppy.

“Like everybody else it was years ago at the Brownies when I first found out about the Guide Dog Association,” said Jeani.

“But it wasn’t until about 18 months ago that I got involved in campaigning to put acoustic noise in electric cars.

“After I finished my accountancy qualifications I had more time on my hands so decided to get involved in something to help them raise money.

“The kayaking is going to be the hardest part for me but my partner is my husband and as he is a gardener I hope he will power us through.”

Aside from the challenge, the team has organised a barn dance on April 18 and quiz and ploughman’s night in June to get past the £2,000 target.

Tickets for the barn dance, at Swallowcliffe Village Hall, are £10 each and include a ploughman’s supper and a glass of wine.

“We have currently raised £500 so we are a quarter of the way there,”

said Jeani.

“But we are looking beyond the £2,000 and if we can raise £5,000 we will be able to name our own puppy.

“The barn dance was run until a few years ago so it will be nice to be able to put something on for the community and help raise money.”
