BREATHTAKING views of Salisbury were captured from the top of the city’s cathedral, which has Britain’s highest spire.
The images were taken from the capstone at the top of Salisbury Cathedral when Gary Price, the clerk of works, and two architectural conservators and rope access specialists, Arthur Needham and Philip Scorer of Vitruvius Conservation, climbed the 404ft to repair a faulty wind meter.
Roped and harnessed, with hard hats, they climbed out of a small weather door at the base of the 123-metre spire, recording extraordinary pictures as they went.
This is only the fourth time Gary Price has been up on the spire.
To reach the top the team had to climb 332 steps, working their way through the cathedral’s roof spaces, then climb 44 metres up inside the spire on ten narrow ladders before climbing out of the weather door and making their way up the last 15 metres or 50ft to the summit using special metal hoops set into the spire’s masonry.
