A CARE home resident has been crowned Home Champion after winning the hearts of residents and staff.

Nick Perry, a resident at Salisbury Manor Care Home, received the award at a ceremony attended by family and friends.

The Home Champion Awards, which mark the UK’s Older People’s Day, recognise and celebrate older people for the contribution they have made to both the care home and the wider community.

Nick, 70, has lived in Salisbury most of his life and worked as a programmes developer for the Gas Board.

He had a rather dramatic start to life when he was born in a taxi during an air raid in the Second World War.

He said: “I’m speechless to have been honoured with this award. It’s a lovely surprise.”

Deputy home manager Natasha Noble said: “Nick is always so cheerful and makes everyone feel so welcome in the home.

“He loves taking part in home activities and is passionate about the countryside and wildlife. He’s a worthy winner.”

Runner-up prizes were awarded to nominees Jean Stanford-Ward and Elizabeth Conway for their contribution to life at Salisbury Manor.

Jean, 85, was also nominated for her incredible sporting achievements which include skiing for Great Britain in the 1956 Winter Olympics.

Elizabeth, 90, was nominated for her wonderful story telling and her experiences serving in the Free French Forces during the Second World War.
