PHOTOGRAPHER Alan Cowley hopes to "grab imaginations" as he holds his first solo show Water at Fisherton Mill in Salisbury this month.

The exhibition is based on the theme of water and includes evocative images of beaches, rivers, lakes and the sea taken in both Britain and Spain. It starts on Saturday, June 4.

He said: "I want to grab the imagination of the viewer, get them to stop, look at the picture and think about it."

Alan Cowley takes his photographs at dawn. Some of the images are in full colour, but more recent works are in black and white, a palette

which Cowley believes adds an extra layer of interest to the subject matter, forcing the viewer to see the landscape in a different way.

The star of the exhibition is Silencio, a vast seascape over two metres wide depicting a serene ocean, the foreground scattered with rocks and a low line of cliffs in the background.

The 15 other pieces include a group of smaller photographs of Buttermere in the Lake District and some ghostly breakwaters emerging from a strangely milky sea.

The photographs are mounted on thin sheets of aluminium, an unusual method of display which allows the viewer to see the image directly without any distorting glazing.

Admission is free. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, and Saturday, 9.30am to 5.30pm. The exhibition runs until June 25.
