A SELECTION of cafes, pubs, restaurants and takeaways have recently been given new food hygiene ratings.

One takeaway included in this week's roundup was told that 'major improvement is necessary' to its management of food safety.

Food hygiene ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, the government department responsible for protecting public health in relation to food.

It is important to note that food hygiene ratings reflect the standards of food hygiene, not the food quality.

What each hygiene rating means:

0 - Urgent improvement necessary

1 - Major improvement necessary

2 - Some improvement necessary

3 - Hygiene standards generally satisfactory

4 - Hygiene standards good

5 - Hygiene standards very good
